Some classic Xmas Specials to look forward to
It’s no great secret that many long running dramas and soaps will have their usual annual Christmas Specials. Most notably Eastenders will no doubt be a somber affair; when isn’t it ever?! Coronation Street and Emmerdale will likewise roll out their festive editions over the holiday period too.
But the most eagerly anticipated show will be the finale of season four of ITV’s smash hit Downton Abbey. The final show is due to air on Christmas Day and with the present story unfolding, it is sure to be another dramatic tearjerker.
For the more jovial in us, there’s a good range of comedy specials in store. Undoubtedly, a few old classics such as Only Fools and Horses will be dusted down for their annual showing. Even better news for David Jason fans is that he will be starring in a 30-minute brand new, one-off episode of the classic BBC sitcom Open All Hours! Talk about rolling back the years!
Reprising his role of Granville, alongside his son; they now run the back-water grocery store inherited from his uncle Albert Arkwright, played by the late great Ronnie Barker in the original 1970’s series.
Lynda Baron and Maggie Ollerenshaw will also return as nurse Gladys Emmanuel and Mavis respectively, and the programme’s original writer, Roy Clarke, will pen the episode. It will surely be a real treat of a trip down memory lane for many generations of TV lovers.
Some modern British classics also get the Christmas treatment!
It is rumoured that the hit series Sherlock may have a Christmas special hidden away waiting to be unleashed, in addition to the rest of the upcoming third series in the near future. This one is unconfirmed as yet but chances look pretty good.
One confirmed show is BBC Three’s hit comedy series Bad Education, which has commissioned a Christmas special. And all Doctor Who fans will be pleased to know that a Christmas Special is absolutely dead cert confirmed to go ahead.
