The big kick off starts with Man Utd v Spurs on BT Sport
Louis van Gaal has spent big this summer and with his new look midfield engine of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin feeding the youthful and pacey new forward Memphis Depay, he’ll be desperate to avoid a repeat of last season’s opening day defeat by beating North London’s Tottenham Hotspur; live on BT Sport at 12:45pm.
With other recruits such as Matteo Darmian and Sergio Romero also looking to make an impression, there’s a lot of new faces that will need to bed in and gel if United’s title charge is to have any lasting appeal.
Much like Spurs of the past two years, new signings do not automatically equal success and it can be several months, if not seasons until new acquisitions start to show any potential. Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino knows full well that his biggest worry last season was Spurs’ leaking defence and unsurprisingly, this year, the back line will has a completely new look to it.
Considering Spurs poor record at Old Trafford and the sheer anticipation of the opening days play, it looks to be a game of United’s new look attack, versus Spurs new look defence. So the pundits unsurprisingly, are putting their bets firmly on the Red Devils to take all three points in this testing opening day fixture. Perhaps Harry Kane may just upset those odds.
Who’ll be in the hunt?
As of last season, most in the game believe it will still be a two horse race between defending Premier League champions Chelsea and United’s bitter rivals Manchester City. United, Liverpool and Arsenal fans may have something to say about that, with all three making a few marquee signings themselves that could mean the difference between a few valuable points here or there. But the safe money has to still be on Mourinho’s men, who by their high standards, have had a torrid pre-season. But when the first whistle of the real season begins, we all know they can go up several gears.
Who’ll hope to avoid the drop?
Premier League new boys Bournemouth, Watford and Norwich all have the daunting task of playing 38 games simply to survive. After all three had great season’s in the Championship, the onus is now on maintaining and consolidating their places amongst the league elites which is no easy task.
Of those clubs, most believe all three may go down but fans of Leicester, Newcastle, Sunderland and arguable West Ham with Big Sam now gone may have a few nail biting months ahead. They certainly won’t be sitting comfortably this season.
